New puppy and the Palace

October 15, 2014, 10:35 PM
Q: Well... we thought our 13 week old Yorkie did a great job for her 1st day in her Palace. She did everything in the right spot. Then we had her come out & play & she did her quick (fast as lightning) squat & peed right next to her Palace. Any suggestions?
A: With a puppy her age it is best to assume that she always has to pee, especially after any event-eating, drinking, playing or sleeping. You have to options when she has been in the Palace-if outdoor training is the ultimate goal you should pick her up as soon as you open the door and take her outside----if indoor pad training is the goal you should leave her in the palace once she wakes up or realizes you are around for 5-10 minutes so that she can eliminate just before she leaves. During the first couple weeks it is best for her to spend time in the Palace whenever she is not actively engaged with you so she becomes comfortable and understands that if elimination is necessary while she is in there it is okay.
